I thought native is used for "indigéne" wish in french doesn't sound pretty well. Maybe that's the way we translate it but the meaning is not so badly "flavoured" in english. If native can also be translated as "natif" is a bit better but I'm not sure you can use it with french.
I make some research, english seems to use native language as mother tongue whish can be translated by "langue maternelle". So no racial connotation in english maybe. Nevermind welcome in France the country where black people or not black but "colored people" ^^.
